A sentimental piece, this inkwell is crafted from a horse’s hoof in memory of Saala (inscribed on the hinged lid) who was born in 1892 and died September 1912. It is attached to a horseshoe base and finished with silverplated mounts and lid. There are two wells under the lid. This practice of using animal parts, particularly those of beloved pets or horses, for sentimental objects, was not uncommon in the past. It served to commemorate and preserve a connection to the animal. The hoofs were carefully preserved, cleaned, and mounted, usually with engravings or inscriptions detailing information about the horse.
