This inkwell was made in the Heintz Art Metal Shop in Buffalo, New York. It is rounded, almost spherical in shape with a domed lid. The inkwell is decorated with three silver overlay designs. The underside is marked “Sterling on Bronze”, Pat. Aug. 27,12, with the H.A.M.S. diamond shape. (Heintz Art Metal Shop).
The Heinz Art Metal Shop, active from 1906 to 1930, was known for its innovative technique of attaching sterling silver overlays to bronze without using solder. This method was patented in 1912 and is a hallmark of their work.
