This is a Heintz sterling silver overlay on bronze inkwell and matching pen tray, showcasing the hallmark craftsmanship and innovative techniques of the Heintz Art Metal Shop.

Inkwell Description:

  • Form and Design: The inkwell features a distinctive, rounded form with a smoothly domed, hinged lid. The body of the inkwell has a broad, slightly flared base. The dark, patinated bronze surface serves as a backdrop for the intricate sterling silver inlays.
  • Sterling Silver Overlay: The inkwell is adorned with delicate sterling silver inlays in the “Pine Cone” pattern, a popular motif in Arts & Crafts metalwork. The stylized pinecones and needles are meticulously rendered.
  • Construction and Technique: The inkwell is constructed using Heintz’s patented technique of seamlessly attaching sterling silver overlays to bronze without the use of solder. This innovative process, a closely guarded secret, ensured a clean and durable bond between the two metals. The “spun” construction, achieved using a lathe and wooden mallets, gives the inkwell its smooth, uniform surface.
  • Markings: The inkwell is numbered “1182” on the underside, indicating its model or design number. The Heintz Art Metal Shop’s hallmark, “Sterling on Bronze” within a diamond shape enclosing “H.A.M.S.,” is also present.
  • “Verde” Finish: Heintz also made this inkwell with a “Verde” finish. Pictures added.

Pen Tray Description:

  • Matching Design: The matching pen tray complements the inkwell perfectly, sharing the same dark bronze finish and sterling silver “Pine Cone” inlay pattern. This cohesive design creates a harmonious desk set.
  • Form and Shape: The pen tray is long and rectangular with slightly tapered ends. The edges are gently curved, providing a smooth and comfortable surface.
  • Sterling Silver Inlay: Similar to the inkwell, the pen tray features sterling silver inlays of the “Pine Cone” pattern at each end. The stylized pine cones and needles are positioned diagonally, echoing the design on the inkwell and adding a sense of visual continuity.

Heintz Art Metal Shop and Otto Heintz:

  • History and Innovation: The Heintz Art Metal Shop, originally the Art Crafts Shop, was taken over by Otto Heintz in Buffalo, New York, around 1903. Heintz transformed the company, focusing on innovative techniques and high-quality metalware.
  • Patented Techniques: Heintz’s patented method of attaching sterling silver to bronze without solder, along with his “spun” construction technique using a lathe, revolutionized the production of metalware. These advancements allowed for greater precision, efficiency, and durability in his products.
  • Product Line: The Heintz Art Metal Shop produced a diverse range of metalware, including inkwells, vases, bowls, desk accessories, picture frames, jewelry, bookends, and even monumental table lamps, showcasing the versatility of their techniques and designs.
