This inkwell is made to look like a tied handkerchief full of hazelnuts. The hazelnuts inside are actual nuts with no sign of decay. Perhaps they were treated in some way…or maybe hazelnuts have a long shelf life. The folds and knots of the handkerchief are realistically depicted. The hazelnuts appear as if they are pushing against the fabric from inside. The use of real hazelnuts reflects the artistic trends of the late 19th century, where everyday objects were often transformed into decorative art. The piece is weighted and has a milk glass insert.
