The inkstand has a rectangular base made of polished green onyx. The onyx exhibits the characteristic translucent quality and swirling bands of light and dark green, with veins of white and brown. The base is rectangular in shape and has a pen channel in front. Supporting the onyx base are four small, spherical brass ball feet located at each corner.

The inkstand has:

  • Square Glass Inkwell: The glass is thick and has beveled edges. The inkwell is held within a brass mounting at the top.
  • Onyx Lid with Brass Fittings: The inkwell is topped with a square lid made of matching green onyx. This lid is attached to a combined brass backing and hinge mechanism. The lid has a brass ball finial.
