The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization established in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, by Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson. It was composed of veterans from the Union Army, Navy, and Marines who served during the American Civil War.

The GAR played a significant role in post-Civil War America, advocating for veterans’ rights and benefits. It was instrumental in establishing Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) as a national holiday to honor fallen soldiers. At its peak in 1890, the GAR had over 410,000 members and was a powerful political force, helping to elect several U.S. presidents.

The organization also provided social and charitable support to its members, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community among veterans. The GAR was dissolved in 1956 following the death of its last member, Albert Woolson.

This inkwell was designed to resemble a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) membership badge. This unique piece features several distinctive elements:

  • Shape and Design: The inkwell is crafted in the shape of a GAR badge, which typically includes a star or shield design. The underside is marked “Landers Frary & Clark New Britain Conn.”
  • Emblems and Dates: Prominently displayed are the dates “1861” and “1866,” marking the beginning and end of the Civil War. These dates are significant as they frame the period during which the GAR members served. Each point of the star are branch of service insignia.
  • Inkwell’s Lid: The inkwell’s lid shows the goddess Minerva, associated with justice, wisdom, and victory, standing over a soldier and sailor clasping hands representing Loyalty and Fraternity, and two children receiving protection, representing Charity, the three cardinal precepts of the organization.
