A whimsical hand painted clown, attired in a bright yellow suit with floral markings and pom-poms, sits smiling. There is a green pen holder sandwiched between his black shoes, each with a red pom-pom. The clown’s head lifts off to access the inkwell.
The piece bears the crown mark of the Goebel company in Germany, both on the base and under the clown’s head (double crown). There is also a blue stamp crown mark, DEP and XS459 incised on the bottom base. The inkwell dates from 1923 – 1949.
