The bronze lid on this glass inkwell is embossed with the following: “BREVETE CALENDRIER ENCRIER – PARIS – SGDG CF-GR”. The term “Brevete” is French for “patented”. It indicates that the design or mechanism of the inkwell was patented, ensuring its uniqueness and protection from imitation. The phrase “SGDG” stands for “Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement,” meaning “Without Government Guarantee,” a common disclaimer in French patents. The initials “CF-GR” likely refer to the manufacturer or designer, though the exact identity remains unclear.
The perpetual calendar feature of this inkwell is a rarity. The knob on the top allows you to change the month, while the top of the lid under the knob can be turned to change the day. Beyond the calendar aspect, the inkwell itself has a glass body that is likely hand-blown, with a sturdy and elegant design that complements the intricate bronze lid.
