Glass Double Inkstand – “Victor”

Categories Glass - Non-figural
Material Glass, Rubber
Markings See narrative
Manufacturer Bainbridge Kimpton & Haupt Inc
Origin United States
Date or Era circa 1920
Measuring 7” x 5” x 1 ½” high

This inkstand with a pressed glass base has two reservoirs for ink. The covers (one red, one black – made of resin or hard rubber) fit over the reservoirs and, when pushed with the pen, rotate open or closed. Between the inkwells is a recessed area for nibs, paper clips, etc. The front of the inkstand has two pen channels.

The lids are marked “VICTOR” on the exposed side. The underside of the lids bears the diamond-shaped logo “B K & H” and “MADE IN U.S.A.” The original box shows the “B K & H” logo. The front flap of the box shows “1 Only [HAMMETT’S] No. 57 Inkstand”. We assume “B K & H” was the manufacturer and Hammett’s was the distributer. “B K & H” is Bainbridge, Kimpton & Haupt Inc.

Bainbridge, Kimpton & Haupt Inc. was known for producing high-quality inkwells and inkstands. One of their popular models was the “Victor” inkstand, which came in various shapes, sizes, and designs. Four models are shown here.

#1 Double – see above

#2 Single reservoir version of the double described above.

#3 features a pressed glass body with a round, wide base that tapers towards the top with a hard rubber funnel. The bottom is embossed “TWN Co.” (The Weeks-Newman Co.).  In 1923, the TWN Co. became Bainbridge Kimpton & Haupt Inc., whose name is shown on the box.

#4 Believed to be an earlier version. The lid with funnel aperture fits down inside the well. This would be messier to fill or clean than the subsequent “swivel” or “slide” lids.

#3 sold for $25 in October 2019
