- Description and Materials
- Overall Form: A rectangular desk stand featuring two inkwells and a generous pen tray area.
- Base Material (Marble): The base is made of a slab of polished yellow marble, most likely Giallo Siena. The warm, rich color of the stone creates an elegant and sophisticated contrast with the metal hardware.
- Inkwells and Hardware:
- Lids: The two inkwells are covered with hinged metal lids, likely brass that have developed a patina over time.
- Inserts: The presence of the double glass inserts is a nice feature.
- Feet: The inkstand stands on four small, rounded metal ball feet.
- Pen Tray: The large, recessed area in the front provides ample space for resting multiple dip pens.
- Age
- Age: The combination of the style and the “Made in Germany” mark provides a dating window:
- The mark “Made in [Country]” was mandated by the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 in the United States. Its appearance on objects intended for export is common from 1891 onward.
- Conclusion on Age: This inkstand was most likely manufactured between 1891 and 1920 (the start of World War I severely curtailed German exports, and styles changed rapidly after that).
III. The Maker’s Mark
The inscription “Made in Germany” (in English) confirms the country of manufacture and the date range (post-1890).
The complex mark – a large “S” with a backwards “C” through it—is the trademark of a German metalware or stone and metal workshop.
The most common reading of a mark combining S and C in a single monogram in this era is Ernst Schneider & Co. (S. & C.) of Frankfurt, Germany.
- About Ernst Schneider & Co.: While they are most famous for their high-quality lithophanes (translucent porcelain panels), they also manufactured a wide variety of metal goods, lamps, and mixed-media articles for export. Their operating period aligns perfectly with the date range established by the “Made in Germany” mark.
