German Commemorative Inkstand

Marked on the back of the centerpiece: “Verlag bei E G Zimmermann in Hanau”, a company famous for its cast metal products. The company was established in 1842 and became renowned for its fine and delicate cast iron and brass products, which were often exported to the U.S., and even reached the Czar’s court in Moscow.

It’s believed this inkstand commemorates the South German states joining the North German Confederation, forming the Deutsches Reich (German Empire). Nicely detailed with clasped hands surrounded by dual flags and weaponry. The lids on the inkwells depict Roman ceremonial helmets with griffon crests.
