The edging of the inkstand is decorated with reeded borders, a classic Neoclassical motif consisting of parallel, rounded ridges. The inkstand is elevated by four triangular fluted feet, one at each corner. These feet are shaped like inverted triangles with vertical fluting.
The inkstand is fitted with five individual containers; each designed for a specific writing accessory:
- Three Inkwells: One positioned in the center, with two smaller containers on each side.
- One Pounce Pot (or Sander): Located at one end is a glass container with a perforated sterling silver top.
- Quill Holder
Hallmarks:
The inkstand is hallmarked for London, John Emes, 1799. These hallmarks include:
- The lion passant guardant, signifying sterling silver standard.
- The leopard’s head crowned, the town mark for London.
- The date letter for 1799 (“D”).
- The maker’s mark of John Emes (“J-E”).
