Date or Era circa 1880

This is an ornate French Neo-Renaissance (or Louis XVI Revival) brass inkstand, likely dating from the late 19th century (circa 1870–1890). This style of casting—fusing classical architectural elements with mythological and natural motifs—was a hallmark of Parisian bronziers during the Napoleon III era.

Description

  • The Central Urn: The inkwell itself is designed as a classical urn or vase. It features two prominent bearded masks on the shoulders, representing satyrs or Bacchus, which are common motifs in French decorative arts.
  • The Lid & Finial: The hinged lid has a distinctive gadrooned (swirled) pattern. It is topped with a pinecone or acorn finial, a traditional symbol of growth and longevity.
  • The Side Trays: On either side of the central pedestal are two integrated, scalloped shell-shaped trays. These were traditionally used to hold extra pen nibs, wax seals, or small desk accessories.
  • The Base & Ornamentation: The standish is tiered and heavy, featuring an “egg-and-dart” molding along the lower rim. The front is dominated by a large, ornate acanthus leaf cartouche that flows downward, acting almost like a decorative apron.
  • Condition: The glass or ceramic insert is missing.

Age and Identification

Given the complexity of the casting and the specific combination of the masks and shell trays, this piece was likely produced during the height of the Victorian interest in revival styles. The solid brass casting is of high quality.
