French Rococo Revival Cut Glass & Ormolu Inkwell

This French inkwell dates to the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900), made in the Rococo Revival (Louis XV) style characteristic of the Napoleon III / Belle Époque era.

Description & Features

• Glass Body: Heavy, clear molded and cut crystal/glass block with deeply beveled edges and a substantial stepped square profile. The top features a molded integral pen rest surrounding the central well.
• Hinged Cap & Collar: Domed, bulbous brass cap mounted on a fitted collar. The crest of the cap is embellished with applied Rococo scrollwork and a central foliate cartouche. The hinged lid opens to reveal the fitted circular glass insert.
• Gilt Base & Feet: The glass block rests within an ornate, pierced openwork gilt brass (ormolu) framework. The frieze is cast with scrolling acanthus leaf vines, rocaille motifs, and rope-twist borders, supported at the corners by four sweeping cabriole feet terminating in scrolled paw feet.
• Condition & Patina: The brass work shows authentic aging, with warm mellowing, typical verdigris/tarnish around the interior lip and rim, and soft surface wear on the high points of the cap consistent with late 19^th century use.
