A hard paste porcelain inkstand made in Paris – “Porcelaine de Paris,” commonly known as “Vieux Paris.” The handle of this inkstand is formed by two swans. Resting on four paw feet, the spout is in the form of a fish. The piece is hand painted with floral patterns and bird imagery. In the center is an ink pot with a lift-off lid.
The underside of the inkstand bears a “crossed arrows” mark attributed to La Courtille porcelain factory. It is also marked “B. Altman & Co, Paris – New York, Made in France”. B. Altman & Company was a luxury department store founded in New York City by Benjamin Altman in 1865. Its branches included a store in Paris.
