This French porcelain inkstand has two separate inkwells, each with a hinged lid. Additionally, there are two holes designed to hold wax seals and one seal; two quill holes; and a lidded compartment in the center to store stamps or wafers (used to seal letters). Two handles are attached to the side of the inkstand.

The porcelain has a glazed finish with a vibrant yellow background. The inkwell is adorned with hand painted floral decorations – chrysanthemums with leaves. The most prominent image is a beautifully rendered hummingbird, depicted with its wings spread in flight.
