Materials & Construction
- The Body: The cylindrical base is crafted from a smooth white marble.
- The Mounts and Feet: The inkwell is framed by decorative gilt metal hardware. The base rests upon three small, knurled round feet that match the textured, fluted finial on the hinged lid.
- Decorative Details: A pierced gilt gallery band featuring an intricate laurel leaf and berry motif encircles the lower circumference of the stone base. The collar surrounding the lid displays textured rope-twist and chased scale patterns.
- Interior Components: Lifting the hinged, domed lid reveals an original removable clear glass insert (liner). The bottom base plate is made of solid bronze, secured by a central screw mechanism.
Where was it made? It was almost certainly made in France (likely Paris), which was the global epicenter for high-end decorative bronze work and desk accessories during the 19th century. The meticulous cast-and-chased gilt bronze mounts, classical design motifs (like the laurel wreath gallery), and use of fine white marble/alabaster are hallmarks of traditional French ormolu-work.
When was it made? It dates to circa 1870–1900. Pieces featuring this blend of Neoclassical revival styling, finely textured knurled hardware, and precise cast metal components were extensively produced by French bronze-casters and desk ware manufacturers during this era.
