French Opaline Glass Double Inkstand

This inkstand features an inkwell, and a sander made from turquoise blue opaline glass with silver mountings. The French refer to the color as “bleu de lin” (linen blue). Opaline glass is known for its milky, translucent quality and was popular in France during the 19th century. The inkwell and sander are mounted on an ornate silver holder with a decorative Rococo handle.  The holder is engraved with “IIIIVXX” for April 5, 1820, and also bears a crowned “V” French silver community mark.
