This marble and bronze double inkstand is a sophisticated example of French desk ware, designed in a classical revival style.
Physical Description
- The Base: The inkstand features a large, rectangular base crafted from dark, heavily veined green and white marble. A rectangular depression is carved into the center of the marble to serve as a pen tray.
- Inkwell Reservoirs: Two ornate bronze inkwell housings are mounted on either side of the central tray. These vessels are decorated with high-relief classical motifs, including circular medallions and vertical ribbed patterns.
- Lids and Finials: Each inkwell is covered by a hinged bronze lid. The finials for these lids are cast in the form of classical female busts, each wearing an ornate diadem or crown and classically draped clothing.
- Ornamentation: The front and sides of the marble base are embellished with gilded or patinated bronze appliqués, including central floral rosettes flanked by acanthus leaf sprays.
Maker and Origin
- Markings: The underside of the circular bronze ball feet is explicitly stamped with the words “BRONZE” and “FRANCE“.
- Hallmark: Between these words is a small rectangular hallmark containing the initials “GP” inside a stylized frame. This mark is associated with Parisian bronze foundries active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Estimated Age: Based on the material composition and the Neoclassical design elements, this piece likely dates to the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900).
