French inkwell in glazed faience with contrasting ormolu mounts and lid in the French Neoclassical style. It was designed by Paul Jean Milet (1870 – 1950) for the Paul Milet Pottery at Sèvres, France circa 1915. The inkwell’s exterior is decorated with a sophisticated stippled glaze of either poudré blue or blood red (both examples shown here) with contrasting mounts of gilt bronze at the base, rim, and lid (detailed with acanthus leaves). The piece is marked with the early Atelier Milet printed mark consisting of a blue MP / SEVRES within a dotted circle, used prior to 1930.
