This desk set is a beautiful example of French Champlevé enamel on gilt bronze (ormolu), likely produced in Paris during the late 19th century (circa 1875–1890).
Description
- Technique: The set uses the Champlevé technique, where recesses are cast or engraved into the bronze surface and then filled with vitreous enamel. This differs from Cloisonné, which uses thin wires to create the patterns.
- The Inkwell: It features a single, urn-shaped inkwell centered on an ornate, scalloped tray. The inkwell has a domed lid topped with a pointed decorative finial. The tray is designed with two elegant, openwork scrolling handles on either side and sits on small, integrated feet.
- The Letter Opener: The accompanying tool is a matching letter (or paper) opener. The handle is fully decorated in the same enamel pattern, while the base of the “blade” features decorative enamel work that transitions into the polished metal.
- Aesthetic & Color: The design reflects the Napoleon III or Belle Époque style, which often drew inspiration from “Orientalist,” Moorish, or Renaissance motifs. The color palette is vibrant, featuring a turquoise blue ground with intricate foliate and floral scrolls in cobalt blue, ruby red, yellow, cream, and pink.
Origin and Age
- Where it was made: France. Paris was the world center for this high-quality decorative bronze and enamel work in the 19th century. Firms like F. Barbedienne or Tahan were famous for such pieces, though many were produced by skilled ateliers for luxury retailers.
- How old it is: It is approximately 140 to 150 years old. This specific style of colorful, scrolled Champlevé became highly fashionable in France starting in the 1870s and remained popular through the 1890s.
