This French inkstand is a beautiful example of the Art Nouveau style, specifically dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (approximately 1890–1910).

Description of the Inkstand

  • Form & Material: The piece is a navette-shaped (shuttle-shaped) tray made of cast metal with a golden brass-tone finish.
  • Floral Decoration: It features high-relief floral motifs, specifically poppies and foliage, which flow along the lateral “wings” of the tray. The front edge of the tray is accented with a border of smaller blossoms.
  • Inkwell & Lid: The central inkwell has a hinged lid decorated with a large, intricately detailed poppy blossom.
  • Internal Components: The inkwell contains its original removable white ceramic or porcelain liner. The bottom of this liner has a diamond-shaped manufacturer’s mark.
  • Markings: The underside is clearly stamped with “ORFEAR – MADE IN FRANCE S.R.“.

About the Manufacturer: ORFEAR

ORFEAR was a Parisian manufacturer specializing in high-quality office supplies and decorative metal objects.

  • Specialization: They were well-regarded for producing a variety of desk accessories, including inkwells, trinket boxes, and souvenir items.
  • Style & Themes: Their work often utilized spelter (a zinc alloy) or brass and frequently featured Art Nouveau organic forms or commemorative themes, such as military symbols or religious figures like the Virgin Mary.
  • The “S.R.” Initials: While “ORFEAR” is the primary brand name, the “S.R.” suffix on the mark likely refers to the specific foundry or a “Société” (Company) designation associated with the firm’s production line.

Age and Historical Context

This piece dates to the turn of the century. The flowing, asymmetrical floral lines and poppy motifs are hallmarks of the Art Nouveau movement, which peaked in France around 1900. The “MADE IN FRANCE” stamp suggests the piece was intended for the export market, likely following trade regulations like the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 which mandated country-of-origin labeling.
