Figural Glass Double Inkwell, Black Opera Glass Shape

Categories Figural - Inanimate, Novelty
Type Double inkpots, Enameled Glass
Material Glass
Manufacturer Undetermined
Origin Undetermined
Date or Era Late 1900s

This figural double inkwell was designed to look like a pair of opera glasses, or binoculars. They are made of black glass which was enameled in a colorful scroll pattern. The lids are hinged; the brass collars are nicely tooled with decorative bands and were gilded. The holder is also made of brass, or possibly bronze. These do not have inserts; I am not sure if they did originally. If so, they would have been very small and thin glass inserts.  Since the glass is black, it is possible the maker did not see a need for inserts.
