This faceted amber glass inkwell likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1910).

Description

  • Material and Color: The inkwell is crafted from thick, heavy lead glass in a rich amber or honey-tobacco hue. The glass is exceptionally clear, which suggests high-quality production.
  • Form and Cut: The body is a solid square block with deep concave (scalloped) horizontal cuts on all four sides, creating an “hourglass” profile.
  • The Lid: The matching amber glass lid is square with beveled edges and a stepped, pyramidal top. It is attached via a patinated brass collar and hinge.  The collar features a delicate beaded or “dotted” decorative band around the top and bottom edges.

Estimated Age

  • Age: The mechanical hinge and the specific style of the faceted bevels point toward the Late Victorian or Edwardian era. The use of colored glass in these geometric, blocky shapes was quite popular from the 1880s through the early 1900s.
