These two inkwells from the same manufacturer are emblematic of the stereotypes of the time. Both are of brightly painted wood, marked “Germany” on the bottom, and have a pen hole. The black man, dressed in a tuxedo and wearing a top hat, has exaggerated eyes. The Oriental man with Fu Manchu facial hair and a yellow face, wears a conical Oriental hat.
