A cast iron inkstand featuring a horseshoe with the head of a horse at the top. Four horseshoe nails form pen holders for two pens. The base has hoofed feet and is fitted with a glass inkwell with a cast iron lid.
On the bottom, the pressed glass is inscribed “P.S.&W. Co. Pat Dec 11, 77. A patent, design No. 10,338, dated December 11, 1877, originated the design of “a star sunk into the bottom of a glass inkstand, the said star being composed of radial elevations and depressions.” Peck, Stow, & Wilcox (Southington, Connecticut) made these inkstands.
Single version – sold for $150 in November 2024. (Note: these usually sell in the $50 to $100 range, depending on condition). One sold for $63 in August 2025.
Double version – estimated value $100 – $125
