This sterling silver inkstand was made by Hilliard & Thomason, Birmingham, England around 1873 – 1874. The base and lids are marked with the appropriate hallmarks. The inkstand features an ornate rectangular base with beaded edges. It stands on four decorative feet. In the center of the base, there’s a space designed for placing a pen. The standish holds two cut glass inkwells with sterling silver lids.
About Hilliard & Thomason:
Founders: John Hilliard (1816–1871) established his business in 1837 in Birmingham, England. A few years later, John Thomason (1811–1892) joined the firm, and they began trading as Hilliard & Thomason.
Specialties: Hilliard & Thomason were renowned for creating small silver items, including snuff boxes, wine labels, vinaigrettes, exquisite mother-of-pearl inlaid knives and novelty nutmeg graters that resembled various fruits, shells, and other objects.
