The term “Empire style” refers to a design movement that originated in France during the early 19th century under the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. This style is characterized by its grandeur, symmetry, and use of classical elements inspired by ancient Rome and Greece. Common motifs include laurel wreaths, columns, and other classical symbols of power and victory.

This green glass inkwell is adorned with a gilt ormolu overlay. Though unmarked, the glass has the quality of Baccarat. The hinged lid of the inkwell is decorated with a laurel wreath and ribbon, typical motifs of the Empire style, symbolizing victory and honor. The bottom of the inkwell features a sunburst pattern.
