Description:
The inkwell comprises two main pieces: a base or stand and the lidded ink container itself.
- The Base: The base is a shallow, circular dish made of porcelain. It features a rich, deep cobalt blue ground color, a hallmark of fine Dresden porcelain. The blue is lavishly decorated with intricate gilding. This gold decoration includes elaborate scrollwork, geometric patterns, and outlines the scalloped edges of the dish. There are also cameo-like reserves of white porcelain incorporated into the design of the base. Within these reserves are delicately painted scenes, depicting couples in romantic pastoral scenes.
- The Lidded Inkwell: The inkwell sits centrally on the base. It is also made of porcelain with the same deep cobalt blue ground and coordinating gilding that mirrors the intricate patterns on the base. The container is slightly bulbous in shape. It features similar cameo-like reserves with finely painted scenes matching those on the base. The container has a fitted lid, also in deep cobalt blue with gold decoration. The lid is topped with a small, gilded knob.
