This double inkstand has covers which “automatically” open when the resting pen is taken up and close when the pen is returned to its rest.
Mechanism: The Physics of Balance
- The Counterbalance: The knob-like handle at the rear is a counterweight. It is weighted such that it is slightly heavier than the metal lids but lighter than the lids plus a resting pen.
- Adjustable Weight: The handle is on a threaded screw. This allows the user to adjust the center of gravity. By screwing the knob further out or in, you can fine-tune the balance to account for pens of different weights (e.g., a heavy metal-nibbed pen vs. a lighter quill).
- Automatic Action: When the pen rests on the front rack, its weight tips the scale forward, pulling the lids down to seal the inkwells. When you lift the pen, the rear counterweight instantly drops, pivoting the lids open for immediate access to the ink.
Description of the Set
- Material: The base and mechanical arm are made of cast iron.
- Inkwells: It holds two square, clear glass inkwells.
- Accessory Holder: The half-circle glass insert in the front was intended to hold paper clips, nibs, or small sponges used for cleaning the pen.
