The central sculpture on this 19th century inkstand is a bust of Hermès (Mercury) elevated on a square plinth. Cast in bronze, he wears a winged helmet – an unmistakable attribute of the messenger god. The base is made of polished black marble with subtle veining. A shallow groove runs horizontally across the front, designed to hold a dip pen. Ornate feet lift the base slightly. Flanking the bust are bronze inkwells with hinged, domed lids and decorative finials.
