Dog – Sleepy-eyed

Categories Ceramics/Porcelain Figural
Type dog
Material Porcelain
Markings "Germany"
Manufacturer Undetermined
Origin Germany
Date or Era circa 1920
Measuring 4” x 2 ½” x 3 ½” high

This  sleepy-eyed porcelain pooch, colored Art Deco orange-red with black accents, has his tongue hanging out, looking like he had a rough night. The piece is marked “Germany” on the bottom. There is a pen hole in the back of his head. The top half lifts to access the inkwell.

Some online postings label this piece “Bonzo”, based on the character created by British cartoonist George Studdy in 1922. Studdy’s “Bonzo” was white with black spots and has little resemblance to this red-orange dog. Other internet listings attribute this piece to Schafer & Vater or to Goebel. Further verification of the origin of this piece would be helpful.

Estimated value (perfect condition): $75
