The Defiance Manufacturing Company made a variety of inkstands with pressed glass bases in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs. Four examples are shown here. With all of them, covers made of resin or hard rubber fit over the ink reservoir and, when pushed with a pen, rotated open or closed. The covers are marked “Patented – Defiance Mfg. Co. N.Y. – Defiance No. 10”.
Example #1 is a double inkstand with the two ink reservoirs covered, one black and one red lid. The glass base is marked “D-30” and has a pen wipe built in between the inkwells. 8 ⅛” x 5” x 1 ½” high
Example #2 is similar to example #1, except a recessed utility area replaces the pen wipe. The glass base is marked “No. 60-D”. 7 ¼” x 5” x 1 ½” high
Example #3 has one ink reservoir and has a pen ledge in the front. The glass base is embossed on the bottom “No. 15-D”.
Example #4 is also a single reservoir inkstand. There is a utility area in the front and pen ledges on either side. It is marked “D-20”. 4 ⅞” x 4” x 1 ½” high
These have sold in the $35 to $50 range.
