This inkwell is a combination of brilliant clear, cut glass and sterling silver.
- Glass Body: The inkwell has a round, “snowball” shape. The body of the inkwell features a series of geometric, faceted cuts, creating a brilliant, light-catching surface.
- Sterling Silver: The top of the inkwell is fitted with a hinged sterling silver lid and rim. The silver is polished and has a smooth surface, providing a striking contrast to the textured glass. The lid is connected to the rim by a simple, sturdy hinge.
- Hallmarks: A crucial feature of this piece is the set of English hallmarks stamped on the silver. These marks provide definitive information about the inkwell’s origin and age:
- City Mark: The mark of the Chester Assay Office, typically a sword, is visible.
- Date Letter: The date letter corresponds to the year 1890.
- Standard Mark: The lion passant confirms the silver is sterling (92.5% pure).
