Cut Glass Inkwell with Mosaic Lid

Categories Glass - Non-figural
Type Cut Glass
Material Glass
Manufacturer Undetermined
Date or Era Late 1800s

This six sided pyramidal inkwell features “steps” cut into the glass on each panel. The collar and lid are brass. The top of the heart shaped lid is decorated with a wonderful mosaic (or possibly micro-mosaic) pattern of a bird surrounded by flowers on a turquoise background.  Fine brass wire filigree surrounds the mosaic.

The lid has a compartment inside that may have been used for extra nibs or possibly a secret note.

This inkwell is not marked. I believe it may have been made in Italy, as this type of mosaic work was made there, but I am not completely certain.
