Description

  • The Base: A heavy, square-cut crystal (or lead glass) inkwell with deeply cut geometric and starburst patterns radiating across the base and corners, tapering sharply from a wide base up to a narrow neck, giving it a distinct pyramidal geometry.
  • The Lid/Mount: A domed, hinged silver lid embellished with beaded borders around the base and collar.
  • The Artwork: Set into the very top of the lid is a miniature painting under glass depicting a fashionable 18th-century style lady in profile, adorned with blonde hair, a distinctive blue-and-pink bonnet, and period attire.

Artwork Style and Terminology

The miniature painting falls under the historic tradition of portrait miniatures (sometimes referred to in decorative arts as a verre églomisé insert, painted medallion, or miniature enamel/porcelain plaque depending on the exact medium beneath the glass). In 19th-century and early 20th-century vanity and desk items, romanticized depictions of 18th-century figures—often styled in the manner of Gainsborough or Reynolds portraits—were extremely popular revivals.

Dating

  • Date: It most likely dates from the late Victorian to Edwardian era (circa 1880–1910), during which there was a massive revival of Georgian and Regency styles across European decorative arts.
