This inkwell’s body is made of hand-cut crystal. The base of the crystal is adorned with a precisely cut starburst pattern. The crystal piece is housed within a bronze filigree cage. This metalwork features a delicate, interconnected design of flowers and berries, creating a naturalistic, flowing pattern. Two pen ledges, one on each side, are cut into the glass. The inkwell sits on four bronze ball feet. A hinged lid, also made of bronze with a matching floral motif, opens to access the ink reservoir.
The combination of the heavy, brilliant crystal and the intricate, light filigree is a hallmark of decorative arts from this period. The style of the bronze work is consistent with Art Nouveau and Rococo Revival influences, which frequently used natural forms and flowing lines.
