An early example of Craftsman Studios with its Los Angeles mark – a hammered copper square inkwell with tooled floriform design. Marked “Craftsman Studios Los Angeles”.
The Craftsman Studios was started in 1918 in Brooklyn, New York by Carl Wirths, a WWI veteran who picked up his metalworking trade as part of his rehabilitation from his wounds. The company moved to California in 1920 and was located first in Los Angeles and then in Laguna Beach. The company went through several incarnations, including Craftsmen Inc. and Craftsmen Co. The company’s Laguna Beach period is estimated to have lasted from the late 1920’s until possibly the early 1950’s.
