Categories Modern-day Production / Reproduction / "Fake"
Material Bronze

Manufacturer Undetermined
Origin Undetermined
Date or Era Probably a modern reproduction
Measuring 4 ½” wide; 3 ¾” tall

eBay listing read as follows:

“Very unique antique Franz Bergman Parrot Trinket box or possibly an inkwell.  Beautiful colors, very unique.  Marked on the bottom 2837 with the Bergmann logo above that and Geschutzt. Measures 3 ¾” inches tall and approximately 4 ½” inches wide”.

I believe this is a modern reproduction. Included in the pictures is one of an actual antique parrot inkwell for comparison. Why is this parrot likely a modern reproduction?

  • The colors (though well painted) are too vibrant. There is no sign of wear anywhere except on the hinge.
  • The thickness of the hinge. On an antique piece, the hinge would not be so prominent.
  • Consider the thickness of the rim when the head is opened and the paint applied to the rim – it does not look right for an antique piece.
  • There is no inkwell insert. The seller categorizes this piece as a “trinket box” or possibly an inkwell.
  • Just because the piece is marked and numbered does not mean it’s an antique. Many of the reproduced pieces a marked and/or numbered.

A true antique parrot inkwell is shown in the last three pictures. The full Inkipedia listing can be found at this link: Cast Metal Cold Painted Parrot Inkwell – The Society of Inkwell Collectors (SOIC) (inkwellresearch.com)
