This figural inkstand, made of spelter with a bronze finish, presents a narrative scene in a rustic setting. A child, wearing a simple tunic-like garment in bare feet, enjoys the warmth of a fire – hands raised and held out.
The log fire is burning on top of a low, square brick structure. Below this structure, a stream of water flows into a small pool or pond. The hinged logs and fire on top open to reveal the inkwell’s reservoir (insert missing). The fence in front and a portion of the tree behind the child are designed to function as resting places for a quill or pen.
