Unusual inkwell – an egg (with an applied wishbone), two cherubs, and a baby bird. The underside of the base is marked “Derby Silver Co. Quadruple Plate” and numbers 1704.
The history of breaking a wishbone for good luck goes back to the Etruscans. They believed birds were able to predict the future. The Etruscans viewed wishbones as magical objects that could divine the weather and predict a person’s fortune.
Perhaps this inkwell was meant to symbolize good luck, fertility, and new life.
