This gilded bronze inkstand is an example of French Belle Époque desk ware, produced at the turn of the 20th century.
Physical Description
- Figural Design: The centerpiece of the stand is a large, finely cast gilded bronze putto (cherub) standing beside the inkwell. The figure is depicted in a dynamic pose, holding a bird aloft in its right hand as if preparing to let it fly.
- The Stand: The base is a heavily ornamented, rococo-style gilded bronze platform featuring scrolled feet and intricate relief patterns on the top surface.
- Pen Rack: Located at the front of the stand are two ornate scrolled brackets designed to act as a pen rest.
- The Inkwell: It holds a single, square cut-glass reservoir that sits within a fitted square bronze frame on the base.
- The Lid: The glass inkwell has a separate, unattached lid made of gilded bronze with a matching ornate floral relief pattern.
Origin and Maker
- Maker: This style of high-quality figural “gilt bronze” (or bronze doré) desk ware was the specialty of prominent Parisian foundries such as F. Barbedienne or L.N.L. Paris. While this piece is unmarked on the underside, it is characteristic of the luxury goods produced for the grand department stores of the era.
- Where: It was made in Paris, France.
- When: Based on the combination of the Rococo-revival base and the sentimental “putto” theme, it was manufactured circa 1890–1910.
