This brass inkwell features an ornate Celtic design with intricate scrollwork and floral patterns embossed on all visible sides, including the lid. The base is broad and decorated with similar patterns, tapering slightly inward as it rises to support the central well container. The lid is hinged and topped with a finial that serves as a handle for opening. The central feature is a raised relief panel depicting the Celtic Green Man, surrounded by foliage. The Green Man, a motif in art and architecture, is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring.

Example #2 is similar with “green man” faces on its sides. These faces are a common motif in European folklore, symbolizing rebirth and the cycle of growth each spring. The inkwell has a square base with ornate, decorative legs that elevate it slightly off the surface. The lid is also elaborately designed with floral patterns and a knob on top for easy opening.
