Description of the Cast Iron Inkstand:
- Material and Form: The main body of the inkstand, including the base and the pen rack, is constructed from cast iron. The inkstand has a square-shaped base with molded edges. The inkwell is topped with a removable cast iron lid.
- Ornate Pen Rack: Attached to the base is an ornate pen rack, designed to hold multiple pens. The rack has an openwork or pierced design, featuring scrollwork. It is structured to securely hold three pens, allowing them to rest horizontally.
- Glass Inkwell: A single pressed glass inkwell is recessed into an opening in the cast iron base.
- “Pat Dec. 11, ’77” Inscription: The bottom of the glass inkwell is distinctly inscribed “Pat Dec. 11, ’77”. This refers to a design patent awarded on December 11, 1877.
- Star Design: The patent, Design No. 10,338, specifically covers a star design for the bottom of the glass inkwell. This star pattern would be visible through the clear glass, adding a decorative element.
