Description

This Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) inkstand is cast in heavy brass. The design fuses organic, anthropomorphic forms with functional desk utility:

1. The Stylized Owl Motif

• Facial Details: Positioned centrally at the front of the inkwell structure is the stylized face of an owl. It features heavy, hooded/almond-shaped eyes, strong brow ridges that sweep upward into fluid organic curves, and a defined, downward-curved beak.
• Flowing Contours: Rather than a literal owl sculpture, the figure is abstractly integrated into the architecture of the piece. The owl’s “wings” extend outward and downward to form the borders and basin of the sweeping, crescent-shaped pen tray.
• Textured Lines: Soft, concentric etched lines run horizontally along the tray bed, mimicking wing feathers.

2. The Ink Reservoir & Lid

• Pyramidal Lid: The inkwell casing is topped with a hinged, four-sided pyramidal lid anchored by a rear hinge.
• Decorative Accents: Each panel of the lid features an incised oval pattern with fine horizontal hatching, topped with a ribbed, bud-shaped finial knob.
• Glass Insert: Underneath the lid, the well houses its original clear glass insert.

3. Underside

• Underside: The bottom shows a hollow-cast construction characteristic of sand-cast or lost-wax cast brass/bronze.
• Securing Mechanism: A circular threaded brass retaining nut at the base secures the internal brass ink cup into the main housing.
