This inkwell has a white, translucent base with an oval shape and flat bottom. Its creamy and smooth texture suggests it may be made of white jade or onyx. The collar is made of sterling silver and shows English silver marks. Under the hinge is engraved “Made in England for Caldwell & Co”.
Caldwell & Co.: This company, J.E. Caldwell & Co., was a prominent jewelry retailer and silversmith based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by James Emmot Caldwell in 1839, it became known for its high-quality jewelry and silverware, especially during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
