Buyer Be Aware! Dog with a Duck

This inkwell in the form of a retriever holding a waterfowl can frequently be seen on the internet. It’s a modern reproduction. I once saw an example online that still had a sticker attached which read “Made in India”.

Notice how the dog’s coat is cast in grooves. Notice the large, primitive hinge. Notice the roughness under the snout and on the underside of the piece. There is no insert on this example, but it would have been made of metal like the other specimens found online.

For comparison, the last picture shows an actual antique (c.1900) example. Study and compare the dogs’ heads.
