This porcelain inkstand is a charmer! It captures a romantic scene of a young peasant couple sitting on a log bench adorned with flowers. The couple is depicted in an intimate moment, with the young boy leaning towards the girl as if they are about to kiss. The log bench, detailed with natural brown tones, integrates two inkwells resembling tree stumps with hinged lids on either side of the couple. The figures’ clothing is painted in pastel shades. It is marked on the bottom with a gold anchor.
Just be aware that this inkstand is likely of modern vintage – made in Germany circa 1980. Consider the inkwell insert with a metal band around the hinged lid, tied up in a bow. One never sees this with antique porcelain inkwells. Sellers claim this piece is hand painted and that it dates to the late 19th century. Be aware that this piece is not that old. Just because it has a “mark” does not mean it’s antique.
