Buyer Be Aware! Brass Double Inkstands
There are so many of these “modern-day” cast brass inkstands out there, it’s hard to know where to begin. Here are three examples of similar inkstands.
The casting is rough, the hinges large, and they appear on eBay / Etsy regularly. If there are any inserts (many have none), the inserts are made of metal.
The first example (of the two, in better condition) has a list price of $125 (plus $50 shipping from Naperville, IL).
The second example is in distressed condition. Do these “modern-day” productions deteriorate so quickly? Or did the seller purposefully distress the piece to make it look old? What we do know is that the piece is marked on the underside “Brite Metal”. (No, that’s not a typo on my part). The seller has it listed at $79.99. But wait! Because I added it to my watch list, the seller has sent me an offer – $70.00 and it’s mine!
No, thanks.
Third example – look at the screws holding the inkstand together – definitely not antique.
