Buyer Be Aware – Art Nouveau “Style” Inkstand with a Bird Finial

As is so often seen with these modern productions, there’s a sudden appearance on the market. The casting lacks crispness – examine the bird on this piece for example. The hinge for the lid is crude. Often the insert is missing.

This mass-produced inkwell has gone through a few iterations. Originally, the piece was stamped “Made in Italy” in bold lettering. Subsequently, the company just affixed a paper label – easy for a seller to remove, making the inkstand appear vintage.  Often these inkwells appear worn and distressed – mainly, in my view, because of the poor quality of the metal and not because of age. In subsequent years, the “quality” has improved, with the inkstand being cast brass, and even equipped with a white porcelain insert.

Nonetheless, be aware of what you’re purchasing.
